When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I started beading when I was young, and I loved it! I was very particular about organizing all the colors and shapes and had many, many bead boxes – I think I enjoyed organizing them the most. My eyes would (and still do) light up, looking at all of the beads. The creative possibilities were endless. One night a family member accidentally bumped into one of my seed bead boxes. Before I could even say ‘Noooooooo,’ there went the bead box and everything in it! We spent the night picking seed beads out of the carpet and putting them back into the box, by color! Unfortunately, even after sorting them, the damage had been done, I was 7, and I was traumatized. I would bead here and there but didn’t pick it back up again consistently until later in life when I was 26. I was taking the train into New York City to complete a Pastry Arts Program. I started beading to pass the time on the long train ride to and from school. It was then that I remembered why I enjoyed it so much. It was fun, relaxing, and gave me another outlet to express my creativity (it also helped me stay awake on the long train ride home, as I was getting home at 2AM.)
Tell us about your jewelry business.
After doing Craft Fairs for a year, I decided to try selling online.
I started on Etsy in 2011 but kept it as a fun side business. I just recently created my website with my Mom (she is my biggest fan and supporter.)
Due to the Corona outbreak, I was home a lot more and really focused on the site with her help. I’d wanted to create my own site for some time, but I always got distracted by my beads when it came time to do the computer work. The site is www.gennextjewelry.com
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
Definitely, The BadA$$ Collection. My jewelry is about so much more than just accessorizing. It’s about empowering Women. I give each piece a name and add a powerful quote in the description to give you inspiration, motivation, hope, strength, and much more.
This Collection has it literally in the design. Quotes like ‘I am not afraid, I was born to do this,’ ‘You’re a BADA$$,’ ‘Do Epic Sh!t,’ and ‘you f***ing got this’ will be with you throughout the day. So if you have an important meeting, a big presentation, or just need to manage your full-time job while remotely homeschooling your kids, all you need to do is look down and be reminded that ‘You f***ing got this.’ And yes, the words are spelled out as I am a very colorful and passionate artist.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
My techniques are a little unconventional, and if I had to label one as my favorite, I would call it the 'organized chaos' technique. Everything in my life has order and structure. I have to plan, so I avoid chaos, and I'm usually many steps ahead of what I am doing at the moment. When I design my jewelry and create new pieces, I can do whatever the heck I want. There is no order, there is no structure, the possibilities are endless! I can break the rules and not conform. Instead, I create pieces that allow people to feel free to break their own rules.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I love the Bead Gallery® gemstone beads, especially druzy, quartz crystals, and mystic moonstone. Let's not forget about HalcraftCollection.com magical selection of Czech glass beads, charms and leather cording. I had a lot of fun shopping; it took me about two hours to complete my first order because of the incredible variety to choose from on the website.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
Not what, who. Women! Strong, Beautiful, Independent, Free Spirit, Lovers, Dreamers, and BAD ASS Women.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
The best tip I can give you is to stay active on your social media platforms. Get to know people and interact with your followers. Support other artists, especially Women, and post regularly. My posts are genuine and authentic - it’s who I am.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I don’t typically follow trends, but I like that seed bead fringe is coming back. Then again, given the seed bead box incident when I was 7, I’m just not sure, haha. It’s a little risky. I love large statement beads; they are featured prominently in my designs. I also love incorporating other mediums such as ribbon, suede, and metal.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
Wire wrapping looks fun! I’m blown away by what I see other artists creating.
