When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I started many years ago when visiting my sister, who also made jewelry at the time. She showed me the basics of beading, and when I saw the beautiful turquoise in her jewelry designs, I was very intrigued. So, I went to my local craft store, purchased some beads by Bead Gallery®, and experimented with different beads and designs just for fun. I mainly made coil and stretch bracelets, which started my creative beading journey.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
Strands by JM is the name of my small business. The title is a play on the words “Strands” from the gorgeous bead strands I use in my designs and my initials. I thank my dad, who had introduced the turquoise and southwestern designs to me when I was young, after gifting me a sterling silver cuff watch with inlaid turquoise bars on the sides that I wear to this day.
In 2018 on one of my yearly visits to family in Arizona, I took a few tools and beads to show my cousin how to make a bracelet. While in Arizona, my aunt took me to the local bead and craft stores for more amazing beads. I was in heaven! This trip reignited my passion and I made all kinds of bracelets and shared them with my family and friends. I had been retired for a few years, and I thought this would be a great hobby. I had friends who were purchasing bracelets and giving lots of support. Later that spring, I made the jump into the jewelry business, which then evolved into Strands by JM.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
Oh, that's a hard one! But, the leather bracelet with the pink carved leaf stone from the Halcraft Collection is definitely one of my favorites. With the start of Fall this month, I wanted to concentrate on rustic, earthy pieces, and with what's left of summer, I included even more color. The beautiful pink druzy and copper components compliment the leather in this design.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I enjoy working with wire! I love to create hoops for earrings, wire wrapping stones, pendants, and even rings. Raw copper has turned into my current favorite wire, which I usually texturize to give it some unique texture and shine. I love all gemstones, but my absolute favorite is turquoise, no matter what stone color. Leather is another absolute favorite I incorporate into my designs.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
Halcraft's semi-precious gemstones are so beautiful! I adore their beads, pendants, and metal components. Other favorites include turquoise, agate, and copper elements. Halcraft Collection has a wide variety of stones at great prices.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
The fall season is my time of year! The flowers still bloom, and the turning of the leaves and all the rustic, earthy goodness of mother nature are so inspiring. I find a lot of inspiration right here in my own backyard. We live on a river with many trees, wildlife, and wildflowers. When I get the chance, I travel west for inspiration also. The rugged mountains, desert, lakes, and beautiful sunsets are where I find inspiration for my unique southwestern designs.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
My tips for social media are staying up to date and keeping things fresh. Although I will say getting burned out is real, and taking a break is a must. I do set my own limits for posting to all social media. It can be challenging to keep up with, but it is one of the most important things to do besides designing jewelry.
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
I would have to say my round nose pliers and wire cutters. I couldn’t do too much without them.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
Fall/Winter 2022 trends seem to be leaning towards Big and Bold. This trend is in my wheelhouse! I've always loved chunky bold designs and infusing this style into my jewelry design. You can make a statement with just one piece, whether it's a pair of earrings, necklace, or bracelet.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I want to learn all the intricate wire wrapping techniques for pendants. I see many of these designs on Pinterest and Instagram. Metalsmithing would be another great technique to learn.
