When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I have always liked to pick up bits of things and fidget with them. I worked on a ship at the South Street Seaport in NYC for a few years, and when there was downtime, I would find loose ends of wires, etc.. and shape them into different things. I eventually started sculpting the wire. Then I started adding beads and was drawn to suncatchers. I love how the other colored beads and pendants catch the sun and how the changing light transforms them.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
Technically I don't make jewelry. I create unique, wire-beaded suncatchers. I do have a few pieces that people mistake for necklaces because they are smaller. I guess they can be worn! My business is called WirePaperScissors. I started to sell when people asked where I bought the cards and suncatchers I shared for gifts, etc.I have sold at craft fairs in Manhattan, Westchester, and Putnam Counties, as well as on Etsy and Instagram. I am a middle school science teacher by profession, so my creativity tends to slow down during the school year. I am selling on Instagram, primarily commissions and private messages at debbieharper738.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I have two favorites! One is my “ Deep Sea Anglerfish.” It is just a strange and beautifully ugly animal with incredible adaptations. I love the ocean and the organisms that live in it. This one is weird and wonderful.“Wave” is my second favorite. I don’t want to give it up! It’s currently hanging in my kitchen and reminds me daily of my favorite place – the beach.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
My favorite beading technique is wire wrapping. Of course, my favorite material is wire. I am drawn to warm tones – copper wire and rich, deep colors like dark reds and oranges. Also, I love ocean colors. Blues, greens, and purples. I hand-wrap all my wire designs and hand-pick each palette based on the project or my customers' requests. The beads are all hand-strung and hand-wrapped onto the wire designs.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I love Halcraftcollection.com's semi-precious beads. Especially amazonite, African sodalite, amethyst, and rose quartz. These stones are so gorgeous, and the quality is fantastic. They are not chipped or imperfect like some of the ones I have seen in stores. I also love the amethyst glass Czech round fire polished beads. They are stunning. Actually, all of the Czech glass beads are beautiful. I also like the Beadalon wire in silver and copper. The little silver charms are so sweet. I intend to use mermaids in a few of my creations.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, the ocean, and all the weird and wonderful organisms that share the planet. I am inspired by looking at other crafters online. I love to scroll through other people’s work and enjoy figuring out how they created something. People who follow their own paths with their creations are always inspirational. My friend Laura at Requenched (IG) is always a source of joy and creativity.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
Create your site with intention!! I kind of dabbled a bit, and now I need to really make it more professional. Know that it takes a lot of time and effort to post and stay updated and relevant. Don’t be afraid to sell your work with pride! You made something unique and beautiful, and there is probably someone who will value it. Set your value at a place you know is fair to you and the buyer. “Like” other crafter’s sites to support them, spread the word, and get your own business/name out there. We are a great community of people creating amazing works, and I’m so glad to be a part of it! I genuinely appreciate companies like Halcraft that help support us and share our creations.
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
I can’t live without needle nose pliers and a wire cutter! I could probably find a way to do everything else, but those two are absolutely essential to my work.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I’ve admired how other crafters incorporate rocks and gems in their work. Halcraft shares a lot of jewelry makers that are using these materials. I love the natural look of geodes and gemstones, and I’d like to use them more in my designs.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would love to learn more about wire hammering. For example, I’d like to do some pieces with hammered copper. I’d also like to learn more about wrapping techniques for different types of wire.
