When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
My beading obsession started as a young girl. My auntie gave me a beautiful and shiny beaded bracelet, and I was fascinated by the beads. During my school-age years, I had a little beading kit and created baubles for my BFF! Anything sparkly has always drawn me in! This was just the beginning of my passion for jewelry making. I have always given away bracelets to friends and family for gifts. During my adulthood, I had to set aside my beading for work, marriage, and kids. In 2011 I started creating again, but this time as a form of therapy. I lost my identity when I became a full-time mom and wife. During this time, I had no job and no salary. I wandered into a bead store and purchased a kit to make earrings. This was my first step to leading me back to my passion for creating jewelry.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
My jewelry business is called Kikita Blue Designs. When I first started designing, I created for my family and friends only. They convinced me to start selling my jewelry, and I decided it was time to open a window into the retail world. The new market is selling your wares virtually. So I created a business Instagram account (Kikita_blue), opened a Facebook account (Kikita Blue's Designs) and an Etsy account (Kikitabluedesigns) all in 2018.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I love everything I created this past year. I believe I challenged myself, pushed myself out of the box, and successfully grew. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be my Agate necklace! This design has many details and beautiful beads. This piece of art makes a statement. It features a big agate stone beautifully wrapped in Czech glass beads and copper wire. I accented with ceramic beads, which I bought at HalcraftCollection.com
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
Wire wrapping is my favorite technique! I love using wire. I am more creative and create one-of-a-kind pieces with wire and a pair of pliers in my hands. I only use copper wire and love the look of Czech glass beads. I also like the simplicity of beading with elastic and beads. With the right beads and charms, that simplicity looks fabulous.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
Wow, where do I start? HalcraftCollection.com has such a vast selection to choose from! I love their fire-polished Czech glass beads, gleaming freshwater pearls, agate, jasper, & quartz stones, delightful patina charms, shiny glass charms, special connectors, and glamorous pendants.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
Nature and everyday women inspire me the most. I love to see a woman and imagine what kind of jewelry I could create for her. My imagination goes to colors, beads, and finally, a design that accents her beauty. Inspiration can also be found in nature. Flowers and autumn leaves create a great color palette. My mind swirls with ideas... Bead choices, correct placement by color, and texture all leading to a one-a-kind piece created just for my customer.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
I'm new to this adventure on social media. I'm still learning, but my advice is to take good photos. Photograph jewelry in natural light (followers enjoy viewing inspiring images.) Always be kind to others, respond asap to messages or DM's. Reply to any comments on your posts. Like and follow back other designers. Think of your social media as your neighborhood.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I would love to incorporate chunky, asymmetrical necklaces, earrings, and bracelets into my line. I tend to design "normal" or "square". I look forward to experimenting with big stones or a multi-layered style. This would be challenging and definitely out of my design box.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
Definitely, I'd like to learn how to brick stitch. This style is stunning, intricate, and piques my interest. I also would love to learn metal stamping. It would be thrilling to make my own charms and connectors.
Vicky was born and raised in Tamaulipas, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States at 18 years old.
When she first arrived in the US, Vicky lived with her father and his new wife in a cute town called Hillsboro, TX.
She now resides in Dallas, TX with her husband, 3 children (Andres 24, Angie 21, and Axel 19), and 10 dogs (2 Huskies and 8 white Chihuahuas.)
Her family is her world! 10 dogs keep her very busy, but she would not have it any other way.
She would love to take a vacation to Denver, CO.
Some of her other hobbies include making slime (she has a stunning collection of different textures, colors, and scents), scrapbooking, and painting.
