When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I started beading in 2019 after purchasing a bracelet from an online bracelet creator. I loved all the stone varieties and knew that often purchases of bracelets/earrings would be costly, so I decided to teach myself how to make them.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
My jewelry business name is The Mayne K. You can find me on Instagram @KustomKreations_tk2 or visit my website https://themaynek.bigcartel.com/
My design journey started when I posted several bracelet designs on my Facebook. Several people stated, “You should be selling these.” I ignored the requests for several months until one of my coworkers asked me to make a specific bracelet stack. I was extremely nervous, but I did my research on the beads she wanted and created the stack. She loved everything about the stack when I presented them to her. She said, “Now keep it going!” That put the fire under me I needed, and I haven’t looked back since. I’m loving it.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
A bracelet stack for a couple expecting their first child. The bracelets have the words Mom-to-Be and Dad-to-Be incorporated in the stacks. It’s my favorite because the baby will be my first grandchild.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
Although I started making bracelets using stretch cording, I love using artistic wire and bead stringing wire to make bracelets. Wire wrapping is my all-time favorite technique. I love using different wire gauges and colors. I feel the wire allows for longevity.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
The top of my list is Semi-Precious beads. I love the different energies the stones can exude. You can pair one stone with another, and it will provide a meaning of wisdom. Later you can keep the first stone you selected and change the 2nd. This provides an energy of love. My all-time favorite stone is Tiger Eye. My 2nd favorite is bone beads. I like the spiritual connection bones beads provide.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
I get a majority of my beading inspiration from my supporters and customers. Once they provide their vision, my creativity goes into its own space. I am also inspired by what other people are wearing. Lastly, from the numerous compliments I receive from others regarding the items I wear. This inspires me to create more ideas that pop into my mind when I daydream. It also prompts me to ask them what they like about it and what I could make that they would be interested in buying.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
My Tips for Instagram are... First, if it a design makes you happy, post it. Utilize the tools Instagram provides. Post reels and use popular music. If a song is trending, use it. Be consistent with posting your content, and be true to your design aesthetic. Lastly, make sure you are having fun.
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
I would definitely need my pliers and wire cutters.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
Adding affirmation phrases to pieces that can allow others to speak without speaking.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would love to learn more about knotting, soldering, and complicated wire wrap techniques. I am looking forward to creating pieces that have complex methods to them but still give a sense of simplicity.
