Happy November! Welcome to this month's Designer Spotlight!
Today I am excited to introduce one of the most admired jewelry designers on Instagram... Khristan Lamb of Gypsy_Lamb and Gypsylambcollection. Between her two accounts, she has a staggering 118,700 followers. These numbers are well deserved as her sense of color, design, style, and photography skills are truly incredible.
When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I started making jewelry for "real" in 2004 when I got a job at a very cool bead shop in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I have been mostly self-taught since then (although I've thoroughly enjoyed the occasional bead class!). I've taught various jewelry making classes and hope to find more time to teach in the future.
I've had over a decade of practice wire wrapping and putting things together. My jewelry is much nicer today than when I started. I like to use the analogy of playing sports or a musical instrument: The more you practice your craft, the better you get.
What is your favorite project that you’ve finished recently, and why is it your favorite?
I love the mystic-coated Moonstone and patina lotus flower charm earrings I recently made with Halcraft Collection beads. The shimmer of the gemstones looks so pretty with the rustic patina of the charms.
Do you have a jewelry business? Where can we find you online?
My jewelry business, GypsyLamb was established in 2010. I decided to start selling handmade jewelry on Etsy to satisfy my creativity and provide a supplemental income for my family. You can also find me on Instagram of course.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
My favorite beading technique is working with wire. I love to push my creativity when creating beaded wire earrings and pendants. I also enjoy simple bead weaving. My favorite beading materials are brass/silver/gold wire, gemstones, seed beads, and Czech glass beads.
What techniques would you like to learn?
I would love to try precious metal clay and create my own charms and pendants. I am also interested in learning soldering techniques for jewelry.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I really love Halcraft Collection's raw uncut quartz stones, small quartz crystal spikes, patina charms, and pendants.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
I am most inspired by nature but much of my inspiration comes from mixed media artists, Indian art, and weaving art.
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
My specialty is wire work so.... wire cutters and needle nose pliers!
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I am really excited and inspired by the current big semiprecious/stone nugget trend. Many of my designs are very delicate. The big stone nuggets make incredible focal points when designing a necklace or bracelet!
When did you start your Instagram account and how did you grow your following?
I started promoting on Instagram four years ago after having my first baby so that I could stay at home with him instead of working outside of the house. I was fortunate to start growing a following before the algorithm changed the way posts are shared, but I think quality pics, consistency, and professionalism go a long way. My family is counting on me, so I've stayed very prolific and try to be original.
Khristan is from the Bay Area but just relocated to Arcata,
California. She is excited to visit the magical Redwood Forest.
She works from home and has a four year old son and one year old daughter!
She loves to knit, crochet and draw (although there is not much time crafting other than jewelry making).
Big Tip for wire wrapping - ALWAYS use nylon jaw pliers on wire work to keep it looking clean and neat!
