monthly Design Challenge with Molly Schaller
The May Pretty Palette was a blast to work with this month! One of the beautiful parts of working with these beads is that the pieces I created are all of a neutral color palette, so they would coordinate well with any outfit. I could hardly stop making with these goodies! To quickly navigate to any specific project's instruction and materials page, click its image to the right.
I am drawn to beads with interesting or unusual shapes, so the silver dagger beads caught my eye first. They were such a graceful shape, almost like flower petals of spring. One side of the daggers is a soft, nearly matte silver, and the other side of the beads is reflective, almost mirror-like finish. By using gold wire along with the silver, gold, and gunmetal components, these earrings are truly a mixed metals piece. The matte, crackle agate rounds add interesting texture and capture the light. These Mixed Metals Earrings will go with every outfit of spring!
I added color to only one piece in this 14-piece collection: the Mixed Metals Necklace. The art tube bead was given to me as a gift by the amazing Erin Prais Hintz, and it fit the bead caps so well, I couldn't help but incorporate it into my project! This necklace is made of links with a variety of metal finishes. The coppery coated Czech glass beads coordinate perfectly with the tube pendant with its collection of tiny charms a the base.
The Bead Cap earrings are sure to become one of your go-to pairs of earrings with their Bali style silver caps with intricate pattern work. Using gold ball pins makes them that much more interesting and versatile.
I went a bit crazy with the bracelets this month! I made eleven bracelets altogether using two basic stretch bracelet patterns. The Infinity Stretch Stacking Bracelets use that glistening infinity link with rhinestones for a classic bracelet while the Mixed Metals Stretch Stacking Bracelets use the fun two-hole beads. I made one bracelet that strings the stretch cord through both of the holes, but these bracelets in which the cord passes through only one of the two holes is such a fun design for summer! It's playful and filled with movement and texture.
