When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
2010 was the start of my love of jewelry. After hosting several MLM jewelry parties and loving the pieces that I sold, I was encouraged by my husband to start my own business. A friend suggested that I take that idea a step further and make my own jewelry. I was not a “crafty” person and never made jewelry before, but I was intrigued by the idea of getting started. I went to one of my local craft stores, bought some beads, a few tools, and have been creating ever since. I fell in love with gemstones and all of the color combinations I could create.

Tell us about your jewelry business.
Shortly after I started learning how to make and create jewelry designs, ZayZak Designs was born. ZayZak is the combined nicknames of my two sons, Xavier, who we fondly call Xa, and my youngest son Zachary. They are my first ever creations! I spent the first five years learning new styles, getting familiar with creating color combinations, and building an inventory. A coworker loved my pieces and encouraged me to become a vendor at a local market in our area. I took her up on the suggestion, and it was the start of my vendor market journey and the growth of my business.

What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
One of my favorite new creations is the bracelet and earring set I made with the HalcraftCollection.com purple Czech glass lentil beads and the matte Czech fire-polished beads. I’ve become a purple lover and thought these beads would be even more beautiful with bronze accent beads. The lentil beads already have a bronze hue in them, so adding a bronze wire and a few hematite beads seemed to be a perfect match in my mind.

What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I love wire crochet, wire wrapping, and making polymer clay pieces. Gemstones are my favorite with endless color options.

What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website
I love all of the Czech fire-polished glass beads and purchased a variety of styles from HalcraftCollection.com. I also love their silver metal findings (connectors), agate stone oval loops, and white freshwater teardrop pearls.

Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
My inspiration comes from nature, colors, and patterns that surround me in everyday life. I believe art can be found everywhere. You just need to look for it. When I shop for beads, many ideas come to mind. I love combining new beads with the many different supplies that I have at home. Color combinations frequently flood my mind, which leads to my design style ideas.

My style is everyday elegant with a mix of rustic elegance. I am inspired to make pieces that I think are eye-catching, original, and appealing to the woman who likes to stand out wearing a one-of-a-kind design.

Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
I dedicate a lot of time to Instagram, Facebook and now focusing on Pinterest as well. Know your customer/client demographic and find the sites where your customers may reside. Be patient with the process of growing your following. Real growth takes time, and for me, both sites have been slow and organic. I’ve paid for IG training in the past. Some of the tips helped, but I think slow and steady win the race. I recommend staying out in front of the algorithm changes as much as you can. Post at the same time daily, follow designers and people you like and think will like your content. Lastly, post beautiful, clear photos with good lighting. No blurry, dark pics please!

If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
That’s a hard one! I guess round nose pliers and needle nose pliers that have the cutting option built in the tool.

What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?

I’ve always loved hoop earrings, so I will continue to create colorful designs using various hoop sizes and shapes. I will incorporate some large and small chain links as well. As a handmade designer, I like to be abreast of today’s fashion, but it’s always my aim to create my own versions of today’s trends.

What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would like to continue learning and developing with polymer clay, metalsmithing, and making glass lampwork beads.
