When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
Jewelry making has been a passion of mine since early childhood. I have literally been beading since I was old enough to thread beads. I come from a very creative family. My mother is the most amazingly creative and nurturing influence in my life. Designing and making jewelry is part of my spiritual makeup. One of my fondest early memories is beautiful tubes of colorful seed beads at the Covent Garden Bead Store in London, England. I would save up all my pocket money and run back to the bead shop to purchase these little gems. To this day, I still have some of those beads, they are my mini treasures of the past.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
My jewelry business is called Zoe Love Creations. I sell to boutiques and have also started an Etsy shop. I began selling jewelry in school during my lunch break for the school charity...bracelets made with safety pins come to mind. I still have the original set of pliers my father bought me, and remember him taking me to my first bead wholesaler in the West End. They are rusty, but they mean so much to me. I went to University and have a Law Degree (long story) but after that I took a year out and did a jewelry apprenticeship with a designer I loved in London. I think it cost me more to get to work and back than I actually made, but she was the first person to teach me about production jewelry and wholesale. After that I went into the city and did Product Marketing for a Global Corporation before recognizing I was not meant for the corporate world in my mid twenties and letting full time Jewelry design be my all. A few years later and through a crazy twist of fate I emigrated to the States. To help me cope with homesickness I enrolled in every silversmithing and fiber class available at the local art school. I now live in Florida with my darling husband (also a Brit) who gave me the confidence to go back to Jewelry design full time, hence Zoe Love Creations was re-born. I had to move half way around the world to find the love of my life who originally grew up 20 miles from me. Life is funny like that.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I recently brought back a design that I created in London 20 years ago, called Love & Peace Bracelets. I have re-designed them chunkier and with more charms. They have brought me such joy to bring them back to life. These bracelets were my best sellers back in the day. They come in over 20 different color combinations. One of my passions is combining stones, crystals, and pearls in various sizes, textures, & colors. My updated 2020 Love & Peace Bracelets allow me to pursue my passion.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
My absolute favorite thing to do is silk knotting, and it comes naturally to me. I create my knots by hand without using tools. Hand Knotting brings me such inner peace. I spend hours every week, and I never tire of it. I love wearing and creating long necklaces. These designs match my gypsy spirit and boho style. I love how soft and comfortable they are to wear. Multiple layers are so stylish and create great movement.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
Can I first say that HalcraftCollection.com is so colorfully beautiful and easy to navigate. It's a pleasure to browse your vast array of beads, pendants, and jewelry making supplies. Halcraft has a wonderful selection of Swarovski crystal, which I love and a great semi-precious bead assortment too. The chain necklace I created for this collection features some beautiful aqua shell beads with fantastic luster and gorgeous Elisa Turquoise stones (These are my favorite.) I would like to thank Halcraft Collection for featuring me as the June Spotlight Designer. It has been an enjoyable, fun experience.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
I live near the ocean in the warm climate of Florida, so I find natural inspiration in that. I adore seashells, mermaids, and ocean colors. It's so fun to add a talisman or creatures to my jewelry. My mum gave me a deep love of crystals and taught me to believe in the stones' spiritual properties. I am inspired by these stones and crystals. Being aware of trends and also being timeless in my creations is essential to me. I am a lover of vintage finds and often re-purpose old jewelry into my new pieces. In my spare time, I enjoy looking at fashion and what is being created in the world. Global goods, textures and colors are also a big influence.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
My biggest tip, which is something I continuously have to work on is patience. It just takes time. I don't post more than once a day. I may post some weeks daily, but if I'm too busy, I won't post at all. Be authentic, be original, and post what you love. Try to take photos in good light and be as artistic with them as you are your pieces. Have fun with it and spread the love. Compliment others, engage with your followers, be thankful for them, and spend time building your community. Your tribe will find you.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I am not sure it's trending, but I love bead crochet. I will be incorporating this technique into more of my work. I have noticed the beautiful resin art of late and would like to spend more time developing some components. I enjoy molding treasures and sinking tiny trinkets into them to create pendants.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I love, love, love, taking all types of art classes, and do so whenever an artist comes to town that I adore. While I have my own glass soldering equipment in my studio and play with it from time to time, I have never taken a formal class in glass soldering. Soldering would be top of my bucket list so I could create charms and pendants.
She has a Gypsy spirit! When she was young, her father bought a large motorhome, and they traveled across the US, eventually settling down in Venice Beach, CA.
Her family consists of her husband, daughter, and 2 kitten fur babies.
Enjoys photography, swimming, bowling, going to the movies, and eating Chinese food or Sushi.
Bead shopping is not work! She loves every minute of it. This year she was able to cross Tucson off her bucket list! It was a magical week with her cousin from England. She can't wait to go back.
The rare moments she is not creating jewelry, she enjoys weaving, mixed media, needle & wet felting, Gelli print, paint, altering furniture, decorating, and the list goes on and on.
