When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.

I started beading when my father-in-law brought over a set of rosary beads that someone had handcrafted with names. I looked at them and thought to myself that I could probably make these. So I went to the local craft store, purchased a bunch of supplies, and gave it a shot.

Tell us about your jewelry business.

I have an Etsy shop, www.noapologiesco.etsy.com

For years, I was intimidated to sell on Etsy. I mostly sold word of mouth and at craft fairs. When I finally took the leap and opened up my shop, I couldn’t believe how easy it was and wished I had started it sooner!

What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?

I would have to say that my favorite project that I recently finished would be a bracelet that I designed for myself. I created it using pyrite beads, vintage brass beads, a cute little brass artisan bead, an oversized vintage sterling silver spring ring clasp, a beautiful Anne Choi bead, and my favorite antique religious medals. I wear it daily (See image at bottom of spotlight,)

What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?

From early on, I’ve always been drawn to vintage and antique jewelry, particularly old religious medals. I love to incorporate them into one-of-a-kind designs. When I started designing jewelry (about 23 years ago), assemblage jewelry was trendy. I used to design under the name Alpha Female Studio. During this time, I found my love for repurposing old pieces and giving them new life. Today, my designs have a more modern vibe, but I still incorporate the same old vintage medals I love.

What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website

I was very impressed with the vast array of gemstone beads HalcraftCollection.com has to offer. There are so many shapes, styles, and colors to choose from. I also love that they carry so many beautiful crosses in various metals. I really enjoyed incorporating them into my designs.

Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?

I find beading inspiration everywhere. For example, a few weeks ago, I saw a beautiful flower arrangement in the waiting room in a doctor's office. It inspired me to create one of the bracelet stacks I used for this spotlight.

Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?

If you have an Instagram, make sure you’re posting daily on your feed and in your stories. If you can, learn to create reels, as video draws a lot of traffic to your page. Also, Pinterest is a great way to get your designs out there. Finally, don’t be afraid to venture out into different platforms. I plan on creating a TikTok after having so much fun making reels on Instagram.

If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?

This is a difficult question, haha! However, if I had to choose only two tools to work with, they would have to be my wire cutters and chain nose pliers. Although I use so many more tools daily, these two are essential.

What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?

I’m working on a line of bracelets using chunky gold and silver chains and beads and necklaces in various lengths to layer. I’m also jumping in on the pearl core trend, incorporating pearls.

What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?

I’ve always wanted to learn metalsmithing. I’m a little hesitant because of my fear of having to use a torch, but I know I’m going to enjoy it once I get the hang of it. I’d also like to learn how to incorporate crocheting into my work. I’ve seen so many cute necklaces using this technique and plan on learning how to do this shortly.
