When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
My passion for jewelry making all began during my last semester of college. I can remember this day like it was yesterday. It was my Spring break, and I was thinking of something fun that my little sister and I could do together. We always enjoyed going to the library together, and I started to check out books on handmade jewelry. One day, we headed to Michaels Craft Store to pick out some beads and string to make bracelets. The first strand of beads I ever purchased was Turquoise Dyed Elephant beads by Halcraft. You will see that I picked out those same beads for one of my Spotlight designs! It is hard to believe it has been nearly five years since that day. Spending that day together beading is what ignited a fire within my soul to continue to create and work on improving my craft and eventually led me in the direction of pursuing my dreams and doing what I love for a living.
What drew me into beading was my love for fashion and jewelry. I always have loved earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. You would never see me without my jewels! All of the women in my family are incredibly creative and talented. My Mother is a talented cook, and my little sister is a true Picasso and draws and paints with her left hand. Both of my Grandmothers were very creative and had a love for jewelry. My Grandma Sherry was the inspiration behind my brand, "Jeweled Hippie." She was a true hippie at heart and made everything beautiful. She taught me that you don't have to have a lot to make something beautiful. It wasn't until after she passed that I had the idea to start making jewelry. Creating jewelry was my outlet and escape from the pain I felt from losing her.
It wasn't too long until I moved from bracelet making to wire-wrapping. My very first design using wire was a pair of peace sign earrings. The peace sign incorporated wire and turquoise seed beads. These baubles caught the eye of a woman in my neighborhood. She had to know where I got my earrings. When I told her I had made them, she was amazed and asked if I could create a pair for her. Each week after that, she would purchase jewelry from me and often had ideas on what she would like me to make for her. We became great friends through the years, and she constantly encouraged me to continue my jewelry making and turn it into a business. I started an Instagram account for fun and would share my jewelry creations there. It didn't matter to me, even if I only got three likes on a post. I still enjoyed creating and taking photos of my craft to share. August of 2020 is when a beautiful woman named Rhonda reached out to me on Instagram and asked me if she could purchase a set of bracelets and earrings I had created. Unfortunately, I didn't have a way for her to buy them, so I decided to open an Etsy shop. She was my first sale and the push I needed to get my creations out into the world. It still blows my mind that people worldwide show me so much love and support. I began to get so busy with online sales and in-person markets that I was able to commit to my jewelry making full time and do what I love for a living! I couldn't be more grateful every day.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
Jeweled Hippie Shop is my joy. I sell on Etsy and also enjoy doing pop-ups and markets. As I shared earlier, Jeweled Hippie was really just a hobby for me for a while. I never planned on it—it just happened! I believe when people see your authentic self and the love that you put into your work, they really admire it and enjoy wearing your creation. I always include a special gift of thanks in all my orders and a handwritten note to express my gratitude. When people spend their hard-earned money with you, you should always show your appreciation. Seeing my jewelry bring so many people joy is the most incredible feeling ever. I love when my customers share photos of them rocking my designs. I am always in awe!
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
My favorite project I have finished recently is all the beautiful jewelry I have created for my spotlight. Designing for HalcraftCollection.com has been a fantastic opportunity! I adore the unique pendants, charms, gemstones, and beads that I was able to incorporate into my earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Here is a photo of my favorite set I created.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I love wire-wrapping using Beadalon® German wire. I also enjoy making hand-knotted necklaces using silk cording. Jump rings are my best friend. You can do so much with them. I love to wire-wrap teardrop beads. It's my go-to for finishing an earring design. Gemstone beads are my favorite. Halcraft always has such a fantastic selection of natural gemstones. Not to mention their wide selection of charms. I also love watching tutorials by Denise Yezbak Moore. Her creations are always so earthy and unique!
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I love Halcraft’s selection of ethically sourced bone beads, semi-precious stones, pendants, and unique findings. I’m obsessed with all of the Peruvian Ceramic beads! I really like so many of the charms as well. You can really create something unique with HalcraftCollection.com materials.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
Mother Nature will always be my muse. I get a lot of inspiration from my nature hikes. The colors of nature are incredible and mysterious. I love incorporating things from nature in my creations, such as feathers, butterflies, dragonflies, and cicada wings.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
Stay consistent! Always try to share something new every day. Even if you are just sending out some positivity into the world with an encouraging post. Never get discouraged by your likes or follower count. If you genuinely love making jewelry, show your authentic self and passion. Support your fellow makers-always! Being kind to one another is so important. I am grateful for the community and friendships I have formed with fellow makers. Number one, tip-always believe in yourself! Like my Grandma Sherry once told me, “Never quit your daydream.”
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
I couldn’t create without my round nose pliers and jewelry cutting pliers. I love them!
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I love incorporating rainbow jewels and butterflies whenever I get the chance. I think those are two trends that will always be popular. I’m excited to start incorporating more chains into my jewelry making. I love that chokers are trending again.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would like to learn more advanced wire-wrapping techniques. I have been practicing wire-wrapping irregular-shaped crystals and stones to incorporate into necklaces. One of my goals is to learn how to metalsmith. I would love to expand my jewelry skill set and create metal rings and pendants.
