When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I was in the fashion business for 28 years before I got married and had children! To say I’m a late bloomer is an understatement! When I became a stay-at-home mom, my fashion career was put on pause. I started beading about 2 years ago to keep me busy, and my creativity flowing! I have always had a love for jewelry and accessories! I mean accessories make the outfit. I have no professional or technical training in jewelry making. I got my start watching tutorials in different areas of construction. Some of these tutorials include wire wrapping, bead weaving, and beading. I love turning everyday items into jewelry components. It’s a fun process, and I thoroughly enjoy every minute of it. It keeps me busy, and creating has always been my passion.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
I started selling jewelry after I realized I was getting lots of compliments on the jewelry I was wearing. I would take my pieces to family functions and would give them away or sell them. One day, I just decided to open it up to the public. It took a lot of confidence and dealing with self-doubt to put myself out there! I’m so happy I did!
In 2018 I became the owner and creator of My Jewelry Shed. I began selling my jewelry at local craft shows and at home parties. I now sell my jewelry on Etsy, Facebook and a couple of local hotels. I also have an Instagram page that I show my recent work. I’d love to have my own website, but I don’t think I’m there yet!
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I’m not sure I really have a favorite! Many times when I start with an idea, it morphs into something completely different. They all end up having a special place in my heart! If a design sells, it becomes my favorite! Although I sometimes struggle with letting go of my pieces.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I am currently obsessed with bead weaving! I watch lots of videos... they make it look so easy. It takes me time to master a technique, but once it draws me in, I love to learn all the different stitches! Turning those tiny seed beads into something beautiful is inspiring and fulfilling!
Another technique I’d love to try is creating mosaic pendants! Using tiny pieces of glass or china to create a beautiful centerpiece is right up my alley. How fun it would be to incorporate beads into the final design! I also love leather. Leather tooling has interested me since high school. Back in the day, my school offered home economics as well as woodwork, rock tumbling, candle making, and leather tooling. Unfortunately, I did not take full advantage of these classes! Had I’d known, I would have continued with some of these skills! It’s never too late, right?
Since I’m relatively new to jewelry making, I will continue mastering jewelry techniques! I’m drawn to so many aspects of beading. I will continue to try as many techniques as I can. Following this process, I will find out what I enjoy the most. So far, everything fascinates me!
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I'm a bling girl! The sparklier, the better! My favorite Halcraft Collection beads are the shiny metals and Czech glass fire-polished beads. The facets that catch the light! I'm also partial to the new Indian inspired beads! Years ago, I traveled to India. I was working as a designer, but I wasn't creating jewelry! Fast forward... I could hit myself for not buying beads and jewelry! I would have brought home boatloads of baubles if I made jewelry then! The vibrant colors of India are not just inspiring, but they also have endless design possibilities!
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
It's funny when I worked in the fashion industry, I traveled and photographed many exotic locations. I often look at these images for inspiration! Italy is my motherland, and these photos are my go-to images! The colors of the Italian coast inspires me. Aquas, yellows, oranges, reds, and blues!
I also try to keep an eye on the current trends, tweaking them, and putting my own spin on the design. Living in the mountains also fuels my creative spirit. Everything around me provides inspiration! When I'm designing a piece of jewelry, I often think of where my customer is going! Maybe it's the fashion side of my brain, but I complete the outfit in my head along with the accessories! Sometimes I design the jewelry first and then put together the outfit and mood!
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
Social media is a new world for me! It was a struggle to understand, and I’m still learning! What has worked for me is to connect with people! Don’t ignore the comments, likes, and follows you get! Always answer back, be kind, be yourself, and return the favor. I’ve connected with so many amazing artists who inspire me. They have helped me with techniques or any questions I have regarding my jewelry business. Definitely post a couple of times a day if you can. I use a scheduling app that has helped me stay on track. It’s all a learning process. Ask questions. Be engaging!
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
Lately, I’ve noticed fringe and have been adding it to my work. Creating fringe earrings is my current obsession. I’m getting better at bead weaving... practice makes perfect. Another trend I love is incorporating leather with beads. This and other boho trends seem to consistently call my name. Bohemian is my style. I’m drawn to the colors and the free-spirited aspect of the lifestyle. Lastly, we cannot forget tassels! I love tassels, the more the merrier!
