When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I have always loved jewelry and the way it makes you feel. My mother and grandmother were both jewelry collectors, so I spent a lot of time as a little girl digging through jewelry boxes. So it seemed natural that I would start creating. I’ve had a few fits and starts with beading over the years. But, unfortunately, life kept getting in the way. Then about 5 years ago, I needed a creative outlet and decided to dive into beading again. It was precisely the right time! It was like opening a door that had been locked. How in the world did I go so long without this?
Tell us about your jewelry business and how you started beading.
You can purchase my jewelry via my Etsy shop, Neverland Baubles. I started the Etsy shop in 2014, listed 5 bracelets, and then never touched the shop again for 3 1/2 yrs. One of those fits and starts I mentioned. But my passion for designing and creating finally took hold. Creating something from your soul is one thing; putting it out in the world is another ball of wax. But I’m surrounded by a rich and diverse community of artists and creatives that make me brave. I also sell in local shops and at art shows.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I get invested in all the projects I work on, but there is something about finishing a piece and having that feeling that it is precisely what you saw in your mind's eye. For example, I've recently worked on a series of eclectic bracelets I love. They are a mix of shapes, colors, and textures that, at first thought, would never go together, yet the beauty of the elements shines through. They speak to my funky loving heart!
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
Depends on the day! I really love gemstones and metals, bone, and glass. Ok, all of it! I love unique mixes of elements. For example, I'm obsessed with vintage Lucite beads and mix them into my designs all the time.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
That’s tough because I’ve fallen in love with so many things from Halcraft Collection. The gemstones are gorgeous, and the bone and glass are as well. I’m a bit like a kid in a candy store when I shop on the website. But, lately, I’ve loved the Mystic Moonstones and Labradorite. They are stunning and perfect for a holiday collection. Also, the pendants and charms are unique. So many to choose from!
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
My inspiration comes from the world around me. I’m drawn to the naturally occurring beauty of everyday life. Nature, of course, but I also look for beauty in the things that aren’t as obvious. I find chaotic patterns and mixes everywhere, and they inspire me to step out of the box of what “goes together” and create beauty with fewer rules. Unique, funky, and a little chaotic makes me happy!
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
Social media requires commitment and consistency, but the rewards are worth it. Engagement is key. Find people and things that resonate with you, and follow, like, and comment. I was so overwhelmed at first. But now I'm blown away by amazing artists' fantastic support and generosity. I've learned so much and am inspired every day by the support!
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
I’d be lost without my needle nose pliers and wire cutters. But, honestly, I’d be lost without about 5 more tools! Only 2 seem impossible!
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I’m practicing my knotting, and I love the vibe of knotted pieces. Also working on wire-wrapped beaded loops. Love the style just figuring out my take on them.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would love to learn to solder pendants and charms. Love the old-world vibe. I just need to add a few more hours to my days!
