When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I fell in love with beading while working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. At the time, I hadn't chosen the main focus, so I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled my way into making jewelry.
Simple beading was the first technique I was drawn to. I practiced and taught myself. I love mixing different colors, patterns, and textured beads together to create earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Of course, there were many trial and error instances (and still are), but as time went on, I learned what worked and what didn't. I quickly became what many call a 'beadaholic.' I love collecting different beads and findings.
As an artsy person, I strive to make most of my findings, such as ear wires, hoops, and various earring components.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
I am the owner and creator behind Hippy Do Da Creations, which was born in 2012. Shortly after my first art fair selling paintings and handmade jewelry, I realized how much I loved making jewelry and soon pursued Soda City, a weekly market in my hometown, which draws a few thousand patrons each Saturday. I did this part-time while waiting tables and working on my BFA. It wasn't too long before I decided to take a year off of school and invest my whole heart into Hippy Do Da... that was in 2015 - I haven't looked back since.
You can find my most recent creations on my Instagram page. It's hard to keep my Etsy shop stocked as items sell at Soda City long before they make it to the shop, however, if you see something you like, please contact me. I'm happy to make an Etsy listing if something is still available:)
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
My favorite projects I’ve completed recently are my beaded fan earrings. The design possibilities are endless... I adore mixing complementary colors together to create fun, whimsical earrings.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I love hand-knotting gemstone necklaces. I find it so relaxing! I sit down with my color palette, a hot cup of coffee, and some groovy tunes. This is my idea of heaven! I also enjoy crafting earrings with wire, my handmade metal components, and seed beads.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
Oh, where do I start? Halcraft Collection has so many magical beads, pendants, and charms on their website! I enjoy cruising the site, searching for the perfect bauble. I'm such a sucker for the Bead Gallery® Czech glass. The dagger beads are my favorite! They are so fun... and you can do some much with them. I also love the Czech glass fire-polished, and seed beads! Let's not forget about their irresistible semiprecious stones!
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
Color, pattern, and textures are the three things that always inspire me. I love incorporating these 3 elements in my jewelry designs. You can find me browsing open-air markets searching for colorful rugs, tapestries, and anything that catches my eye.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach? If you’re new to the social media scene, I’d suggest taking quality pictures with good lighting, research trending hashtags. Let your audience know how/where they can find and buy your art. Also, be persistent and patient. Building your following takes time. If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll find a way to do what you love.
Chris is fortunate enough to work from her home studio, located in Columbia, South Carolina.
When not creating, she enjoys spending time with her awesome husband and 4 furry kiddos (2 pups and 2 kitties.)
