When did you first start beading? Tell us about yourself.
I started beading during the first grade of elementary school. Since the young age of five years, I have always been artsy. Every year when my birthday came around, my aunts and friends gave me craft kits that included jewelry. My favorite gift was the jewelry kits, and I used to finish them quickly. Jewelry pieces with gemstones always fascinated me as a child. I would gaze and wonder what skills it would take to make those shiny art pieces. As a result, I developed a passion for wearing and making jewelry at a young age.
Tell us about your jewelry business.
My jewelry business is called Jewelry By Nina. Since I started making jewelry in first grade, I had a bit of experience by second grade. At the end of the school year, the second graders had to participate in our school's Economic Fair. Each child created 12 handmade items of their choice. I chose to make earrings, and I tried different wire wrapping techniques. As a result, my earrings were a hit. My teachers even purchased my creations. Acton Kids Fair was a game-changer for me. The customers not only bought my designs but also tipped, allowing me to continue my passion for creating jewelry. Now I make one-of-a-kind pieces and have an Etsy shop where you can see and shop for my designs.
What is your favorite project that you've recently finished and why is it your favorite?
I have many favorites, but I'm currently loving the two earring designs I created for Halcraft Collection. The first design features a white and gold color combo. I used Mother of Pearl connectors and mystic moonstone teardrops. I also love these hoop earrings with crackled green glass chips and dangling Mother of Pearl crescent moon beads.
What are your favorite beading techniques and materials?
I love wire wrapping stones, especially teardrops. I also learned to coil wire with a drill machine. It is so much fun and satisfying to coil wire. My favorite materials for making jewelry are natural semi-precious stones. I love how different stones mix and match, becomimg something so beautiful and unique. All my jewelry pieces have a lot of variety of natural stones. Sterling Silver is my favorite metal.
What are some of your favorite beads or components on the Halcraft Collection website?
I adore the freshwater pearl collection at HalcraftCollection.com. These gems are absolutely stunning, and I have used them in my jewelry pieces. I am also in love with the wide variety of pendants, charms, and African wood beads offered on the website. You can make something wonderful and unique with the products available on Halcraft's website.
Where do you get your beading inspiration? What most inspires you?
My inspiration comes from my surroundings. I love looking to nature for inspiration. The variation of colors in a single flower can inspire a color palette. Pinterest and Instagram are also great resources, and I look to them often. Mood boards are so much fun to create also.
Do you have any tips for the readers regarding building their social media reach?
I suggest posting daily and keeping a positive attitude. For Instagram, I highly recommend creating video Reels.
If you had room for only two tools in your bead kit, what would they be?
Those two lucky tools would be my Flush Cutters and my Round-Nose pliers. These tools are must-haves. If you have these, you can start jewelry pieces anytime.
What jewelry trends are you excited to incorporate into your beadwork?
I am an animal lover and have seen animal motifs in jewelry designs wherever I go and on the internet. However, I have not used animal or insect motifs in my jewelry pieces. I would love to incorporate snakes, bugs, and butterflies in my jewelry pieces. I feel there are a lot of ways that you can combine them. I can use them to make rings, bracelets, and earrings. Overall they are fascinating.
What jewelry techniques would you like to learn?
I would love to learn metalsmithing professionally. I have started exploring it and purchased a jeweler saw and a torch. I'm interested in learning to set different shaped stones and forging silver into rings and pendants. In this field, ideas, techniques, and aspirations are limitless.
